The Department of General Education offers public basic courses and core general courses for undergraduate, postgraduate and doctoral students. The Department is managed by a director and a secretary. Two teaching and research sections are set under the Department, respectively for foreign language and physical education.
The Teaching and Research Section for Foreign Language comprises 8 faculty members, i.e. 1 professor, 5 associate professors, and 2 lecturers.
The English course for undergraduates is designed based on the students’ specialties and majors, and adjusted according to their actual language level. The 2-year course is consisted of such modules as English vocabulary, grammar, passage and pragmatics, to improve the students' listening, speaking, reading, writing and translating skills. It is also the goal of the course to enrich the students' knowledge in social, scientific, cultural and artistic fields, and enhance their humanistic qualities and intercultural communication ability. We balance the imparting of knowledge and morals, guide them to establish core socialist values, help them improve their political sense and moral morality.
The English course for postgraduates is a general course for degree that lasts for one academic year. The course integrates English language with art by selecting works of literary and art (poetry, novel, prose, screenplay), performing art (music, dance, drama, film), plastic art (painting, sculpture, architecture) among other art categories as materials. We also work to improve the students' ability in common English models, terms and literature reading by exposing them to the reading and application of texts of analysis, critiques, professional theories. The aim is to improve the postgraduate students’ academic ability to use English for professional learning, theoretical research and dissertation writing, and to train the students to be high-level artistic professionals with both patriotism and global thinking.
The English course for Ph.D. students is a 1-year general course for degree open to all students of this level. Two modules are included in the syllabus—Academic English Writing and English Speaking for Academic Purpose, in order to improve the students’ English proficiency in professional literature reading, writing, translating, listening and speaking. We aim to equip our students with the language skills to freely express their academic beliefs and participate in international academic cooperation and activities in their fields. We value the cultivation of the students’ ability to us English, think critically, free expression in English, and their creativity. In the delivery of lesson, we impart not only knowledge but also morals, to educate our students to be holistic, responsible, and patriotic.
The Teaching and Research Section for Physical Education comprises 3 faculty members, i.e., 2 associate professors and 1 lecturer.
It serves the undergraduate students. With “education as the base, and health as the top priory”, it follows the instruction by ‘Guidelines for the Teaching of Physical Education in National Colleges and Universities’ and ‘National Standards for Students Physical Health’. It offers optional sports courses for undergraduates, including football, basketball, volleyball, swimming, table tennis, Tai Chi, aerobics, yoga, etc., many of which features traditional Chinese philosophy of fitness. As required by Beijing Municipal Education Commission, students are regularly tested of their physical capacities. The Teaching and Research Section for Physical Education has set up basketball team, football team, badminton team, and other college level training teams that are regularly coached by professional teachers. These teams, representing the CAD, have won the several championships or the second prizes in the Sports League for Beijing Art Institutions.
