The Department of Stage Design has a long history of education. Its disciplines are are among the first batch established when the CAD was founded. At the Department located a Development Point of National First-Class Undergraduate Major. For decades, it has formed an inclusive, sound and diverse disciplinary layout, and distinctive, systematic and rational educational mechanism, which allows it to excels in the field of professional teaching at home and abroad.

The Department of Stage Design aims to train students to be professional designers for stage and screen, with comprehensive abilities and solid professional skills. It now provides programmes for 8 specializations: Set Design, Stage Lighting Design, Stage Costume Design, Stage Make-Up Design, Scenic Painting, Stage Technique, Projection Design for Performing Arts, and Sound Design for Performing Arts. One theory-based specialization is offered, i.e. History and Criticism of Stage Design. It provides 4-year and 5-year undergraduate programmes, and postgraduate and doctoral ones as well, to cover all levels of educational demand.

We possess a leading building dedicated to professional teaching. It is well-equipped, spacious, and more than qualified to meet all the teaching needs of various majors. Inside the building, there is an exhibition hall, the Black & White Space, that can host important academic exhibitions featuring top international designers and artists, alumni, as well as teachers and students of the Department. The exhibition hall is an important platform at the CAD for national and international academic exchanges of stage design.

Our faculty members are keen on culture inheritance and artistic creation. They have a broad cultural vision, critical thinking and firm values about art. They are influential in the industry of stage art at home and abroad.
