As an innovative achievement in talent cultivation models and a platform for fostering innovative talents in new liberal arts under the Key Laboratory of Intelligent Dramatic Art Space of the Ministry of Education, the Department of of Science Theatre is dedicated to aligning with the national cultural digitalization development strategy and the industrial demands for new artistic productive forces. Grounded in the essence of theatre itself, the department emphasizes interdisciplinary education, focusing on the application of cutting-edge technologies such as information technology and intelligent technology in the field of theatrical art in the digital era. It aims to cultivate interdisciplinary talents who master the creative principles of theatrical art, possess digital literacy, and have innovative and creative capabilities.

The department currently offers undergraduate programs in Science Theatre (five-year program), Acting (for Motion Capture), Theatre, Film, and Television Directing (Performing Art in Digital Space), and Digital Media Art. At the master's level, it provides research directions such as Digital Theatre Studies, Digital Theatre Applications, and Digital Theatre Directing and Creation. Doctoral research directions include Digitalization of Traditional Theatre, Artificial Intelligence in Theatre, Digital Cultural Systems Studies, Digital Theatre Creation, Cultural Technology (MOE Key Laboratory), and Theatre and Media Studies (Philosophy and Social Sciences Innovation Centre).

The Department of Digital Theatre participates in the construction and operation of the Key Laboratory of Intelligent Dramatic Art Space of the Ministry of Education. Centered on key research directions and tasks, it collaborates with outstanding teams both domestically and internationally to drive collaborative innovation and undertakes major national, capital, and industry-specific tasks. Additionally, it hosts the Institute for Advanced Research of Digitalization of Traditional Chinese Theatre, which is the only “Beijing University Philosophy and Social Sciences Innovation Center” dedicated to art, a Innovation Center for Traditional Theatre Contemporary Inheritance and Innovation, as well as the Beijing University Scientific and Technological Innovation Platform.
