The Department of Directing has a strong faculty team with rich experience both in teaching and practical work. The Department emphasizes practice as well as theory, and focuses on the exploration of students’ potential, with extra stress on the training of students' practical ability.
A 5-year B.A. course in Directing (for Theatre) is offered at the Department. It aims to train students to be professional directors for stage and screen with a holistic view of art, and teachers and researchers of theatre with fine artistic taste, knowledge of directing theory and practical principles. Besides, the Department provides directing programs at B.A., M.A. and PhD. levels and runs advanced learning courses from time to time.
The Department takes part in international academic activities to follow the latest development of the discipline, enrich what to be taught and improve teaching approaches. It hires established directors, both from home and abroad, as teachers as well. The Department always emphasizes practice of art ever since it was set up. From the 1980s till now, the Department has staged nearly 100 plays, which attracted wide attention in China.
After more than 70 years of development, the Department has cultivated many talented directors and actors, such as LI Baotian, BAO Guo’an, CAO Qijing, CHEN Xinyi, ZHANG Ziyang, WANG Xiaoying, ZHA Mingzhe, WU Xiaojiang, LOU Naiming, GONG Xiaodong, GU Rong, XU Songzi, REN Ming, YAN Jiangang, LI Liuyi, ZHANG Yang, TANG Ye, MENG Jinghui, TIAN Qinxin, ZHANG Yongxin, CHENG Taishen, XU Jizhou, XU Ang, WANG Bingran, ZHANG Jingchu, LIU Meng, ZHANG Luyi, TANG Wei, HUANG Ying, LI Bonan, ZHOU Shen, LIU Lu, ZHAO Miao, QI Xi, REN Suxi, etc. Now they have become part of the mainstay of China theatre circle. Among them, there are winners of Chinese Wenhua Award for Drama, the Golden Lion Award, National Award for Quality Stage Design Project, Cao Yu Literature Award, Golden Rooster Award, Hundred Flowers Award; China TV Golden Eagle Award, Flying Apsaras Award, Huading Award, the Magnolia Award, etc.
