The 4th Outstanding Theatre Pieces Performance of Domestic Theatres with “Academy Awards (Theatre Performance)” award ceremony was held in the Central Academy of Drama from October 23 to 26. The “Academy Awards (Theatre Performance)” is an award for drama performance set up by the Central Academy of Drama in 2011, which aims at displaying the outstanding achievements in theatre art creation, commending outstanding performance artistic talents, promoting the creation, research and teaching in theatre performance, encouraging excellent young talents in performance arts to make further improvements and promoting the development of theatre performance to make contributions to the prosperity of the art of theatre performance. The Academy Award has been successfully awarded for four times up to now.

The event received 39 plays declared by 37 troupes across the country, including 12 plays declared by 10 private troupes. Ten outstanding plays were selected and approved which are Six Characters in Search of an Author (Beijing People’s Art Theatre), Everything in the Garden (Zhejiang Drama Ensemble), Kids Wanting to Fly (Beijing Children’s Art Theatre Co., Ltd), Mr. and Ms. Single(Beijing Houlang Cultural Media Co., Ltd.), Uncle Vanya (Shanghai Drama Art Center), Why Not Stay for Breakfast(Guangzhou Drama Art Center), The Red Flag Cana l(Henan Drama Art Center), Family Recipe (Liaoning People’s Art Theatre), Fu Sheng (National Theatre of China), and The Art of War is of Vital Importance to the State (Modern Drama Troupe of the General Political Department of PLA) etc. Some pieces of dramas were played in the Experimental Theatre of the Central Academy of Drama during October 23 and 24. The judge committee of the 4th “Academy Awards (Theatre Performance)” were composed of five international judges who are from Bulgaria, South Korea, Sweden, Russia and Japan, three famous performing artists from China and three professors from the Central Academy of Drama. The judge committee voted on site according to the performances. The awards for the “Best Leader” and “Best Supporting Role” were selected and approved when the pieces performance for two days ended.

A grand award ceremony of “Academy Awards (Theatre Performance)” was held in the Experimental Theatre of the Central Academy of Drama on October 25. 28 experts from Chinese Dramatic Arts Research Institute, leaders from the Central Academy of Drama and all the directors of Departments attended the ceremony. Chen Hao, a teacher from the Central Academy of Drama, served as the guest host, and Lan Tianye, Lv Liang, Zhang Kaili, Dai Yuqiang, Gong Lijun, Wang Ban, Wang Zhifei, Xin Boqing, Huang Zhizhong, Zhou Xiaobin, etc. served as the guests to announce the results of the 4th “Academy Awards(Theatre Performance)” and present the awards to the winners. 8 actors, including Wang Xinyu from Beijing People’s Art Theatre etc., won the awards of “Best Leader” and 8 actors, including Tu Songyan from National Theatre of China etc., won the awards of “Best Supporting Role”.

The symposium on “Academy Awards (Theatre Performance)” was conducted in the east hall of the theatre on October 26 and the troupes participating in the performance also attended the symposium. Liu Libin, the party secretary of the Central Academy of Drama, was present at the symposium, which was hosted by Hao Rong, assistant of the president and director of Acting Department. At the symposium, heated and in-depth discussions were made on such issues as “what is outstanding performance?”

The holding of award ceremony of the 4th Outstanding Theatre Pieces Performance of Domestic Theatres with “Academy Awards (Theatre Performance)” has shown us the excellent works of stage arts and performance creation and has encouraged more outstanding and young talents in performance arts to make new efforts in the development and innovation of theatre &theatre performance arts.
