Shota Rustaveli Theatre and Film Georgia State University is one of the oldest higher drama schools in the world. It has a history of 100 years in producing artistic academic programs. One of its founders was Kote Marjanishvili, a legendary Georgian director who established professional Georgian acting and directing schools. Over the years, he worked and collaborated with such directors as Konstantin Stanislavsky, Vladimir Nemirovich-Danchenko, Edward Gordon Craig, Max Reinhardt, Alexander Tairov and others.
Together with Giorgi Jabadari, who worked with André Antoine for three years in Paris, he participated in the founding of the professional Georgian school. At the same time, George Gurdjieff established the Institute for the Harmonious Development of Man in Tbilisi, and the Georgian actors became familiar with the tradition of oriental sacred and magical dances. Accordingly, the Georgian acting school, since its foundation, grasped the professional experience of the leading European countries and Eastern creative traditions. In this respect, it is a completely unique and outstanding event of its era. The name of this university and its graduates are associated with the success of Georgian theatres recognized worldwide, such as Rustaveli Theatre, Marjanishvili Theatre, Tumanishvili Theatre, Pantomime Theatre, etc.
TAFU is a plenipotentiary member of the European League of Institutes of the Arts – ELIA, the International Association of Film and Television Schools – CILECT, World Theatre Education Alliance – WTEA, etc.
