Mathias Lafolie

Mathias Lafolie, born in Stockholm in 1967, graduated at École Internationale de Théâtre Jacques Lecoq in Paris. Since the middle of the nineties, he worked as a freelancing director and producer at different institutional theatres and particularly in free theatre groups.

He has produced several theatre plays by Euripides, William Shakespeare, Georg Büchner, Pier Paolo Pasolini, Arthur Miller, Athol Fugard and by some new contemporary Swedish playwrights that have attracted attention. And he has come to specialize in August Strindberg´s dramas. In 1998, he directed a production of Strindberg´s Master Olof in the cathedral of Stockholm, Up till today Mathias Lafolie has directed more than 30 plays, among them some productions for children and young people.

In 2004 he was fully occupied in Paris where he formed the company Lafolie en L, an international ensemble where he staged Peter Weiss´ Night With Visitors. In 2005, he staged August Strindberg´s A Dream at Rangayana, the Indian federal state Karnataka´s national scene. The year after he was in Dhaka in Bangladesh and staged Staffan Westerberg´s A Little Dream. In spring 2006 Mathias worked in Moscow to introduce new Swedish drama in Russia at the request of the Swedish Institute. He was invited to China where he directed August Strindberg´s Lucky-Per´s Journey. In 2008, he went to Moscow to direct one of Norén’s plays and also managed a series of seminars and debates. In 2009, he started a new education for directors at the private artistic school “Kulturama” in Stockholm where he is the head of this program.

Mathias Lafolie was appointed as our visiting professor. From 2007, he directed many graduation plays for bachelor‘s students in the Acting Department, including Lucky-Per´s Journey, A Midsummer Night‘s Dream etc.
