Surangama Dasgupta

Surangama Dasgupta won the Gold Medal (the highest level) in Sangeet Praveen from Prayag Sangit Samity, Allahabad. She also held a Master‘s degree in Applied Psychology.

Through the years she has brought together psychology and Kathak to create a new genre of Performing Arts. Surangama believes that Performing Art has therapeutic effect on human well-being. She was the coordinator of the Performing Arts Therapy Centre, Rabindra Bharati University (Kolkata). She was invited as the Guest Professor by the Department of Applied Theatre Science of Justus Liebig University, Giessen in Germany to teach theory and practice of Kathak Dance for the winter semester of 2005.

She is the Director of her own Institute Deodar Suchanda Sangitalaya (since 1991) at Kolkata which produces many talented and well-established dance & music artistes. In 2010 she received the Bharat Jyoti Award from IIFS as recognition for her achievements and contributions in the socio-cultural field both nationally and internationally. In 2018 she got an honour from UNESCO - Sahapedia for completing her research om Mudra (hand gestures).

Surangama has been invited to our Academy in 2019 for teaching Indian Dance in the Department of Dance Theatre.
